MedTech Bulgaria Among the Founding Organizations of the National Oncology Collaboration Platform
Sofia, March 11, 2026 – The National Cancer Mission Hub of Bulgaria (NCMHB) was officially established as a strategic structure aimed at bringing together institutions, scientific organizations, healthcare professionals, patient organizations, and industry representatives around a shared vision for improving cancer care in the country.
MedTech Bulgaria is among the founding organizations of the National Hub, alongside the Bulgarian Joint Cancer Network (BJCN) and the European initiative ECHoS (Establishing Cancer Mission Hubs: Networks and Synergies).
Bulgaria Among the Pilot Countries in Europe
Bulgaria is one of five pilot countries selected to establish a National Cancer Mission Hub, together with Poland, the Netherlands, Greece, and Malta.
The initiative is part of the European Cancer Mission under the Horizon Europe programme and is closely aligned with Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. Its primary objective is to create a sustainable coordination mechanism connecting all stakeholders involved in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and quality-of-life improvement for patients and survivors.
More Than 90 Organizations United Around a Common Cause
The founding forum was organized by the Joint Oncology National Network in partnership with ECHoS – a pan-European platform bringing together more than 60 leading organizations from over 30 countries across healthcare, science, innovation, and civic engagement. The event took place at the GATE Institute of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
The forum brought together experts, Members of the European Parliament from Bulgaria, representatives of European cancer organizations, and representatives of European institutions. At the conclusion of the event, more than 90 organizations signed a Memorandum of Synergy and Cooperation, symbolically marking the launch of Bulgaria’s National Cancer Mission Hub.
“We are all working together to build the Bulgarian Hub based on the principles of connectivity and synergy. We are building bridges and creating a sustainable ecosystem by connecting experts from different fields,” said Assoc. Prof. Asya Konsulova, Chair of the Board of the Joint Oncology National Network.
According to Ivaylo Petrov, MPharm., Coordinator of the National Cancer Mission Hub of Bulgaria, current medical data demonstrate significant opportunities for cancer prevention. “Medical evidence shows that 36% of cancer cases are preventable, but we need to build a modern prevention model based on education. Despite the availability of innovation and access to modern therapies, Bulgaria continues to face cancer mortality rates exceeding 60%,” he stated.
A National Platform for Evidence-Based Oncology Policies
The National Cancer Mission Hub will serve as a platform for collaboration among government institutions, municipalities, academic organizations, professional societies, civil society organizations, and industry stakeholders.
Its key priorities include:
- Improving health literacy and cancer prevention;
- Promoting early diagnosis and screening;
- Supporting scientific research and innovation;
- Accelerating digital transformation in healthcare;
- Expanding access to high-quality oncology care;
- Reducing healthcare inequalities;
- Improving the quality of life of patients, survivors, and their families.
